OK, I've seen a number of posts about this. When I start xawtv and am about to record to an avi-file, I can't choose any resolution at all, it's fixed to 384x288. So I tried altering my XF86Config-file and added "v4l" in the modules section. So now when I started Xfree and xawtv, and I choose "grabdisplay", it's just black. If I choose "overlay", the system actually crashes! And I still can't change the resolution at all.

I don't have DGA enabled since it causes xawtv to crash for me.

Also, is there no way to change the video compression codec?

i suggest you try http://xawdecode.sourceforge.net/
since you can choose your resolution to record with and codec + other nice stuff. its in portage, and i hope you have looked at this post and see if you have the correct v4l dga setting in xfree https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=601579&highlight=#601579
i did the this stupid thing.

and btw have you been able to watch tv and tune in any channel at all? since its a must (i think) to have add v4l in your module section in /etc/X11/XF86Config.

That program seems very very nice! However, I can only choose like 4 different codecs? I'd like to be able to choose some lossless codec like huffyuv or something so I can capture to really uncompressed avi.

Try mplayer (mencoder tv:// -tv .......)
Look at the manpage for more info.
