Hi,

When I open VLC, by default, the audio device is "Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples(capture)". I need to manually move it to "HD-Audio Generic, ALC887-VD Analog Default Audio Device" in order to have sound.

FOllowing the ALSA wiki, i've set .asounrc as follows:

Code:
defaults.pcm.!card Generic
defaults.pcm.!device 0

because my aplay -L output is:

Code:
default:CARD=Generic
HD-Audio Generic, ALC887-VD Analog
Default Audio Device

(it doesn't have a "DEV=x" number but i tried 0 and 1... none worked... VLC still sets itself on the mute mode...).
Code:

cat /proc/asound/cards

0 [HDMI      ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
1 [Generic ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic

Thanks in advanc for any help !

Looks like you use the alsa gentoo wiki, sad you didn't push forward a bit in your reading :)

-> https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ALSA#Laptops_with_HDMI_audio_output
Should solved your issue.

Thanks, it's fixed, this seems to enable an optino in Vlc/Preferences/Audio where I can't select the device once and for all instead of at every runtime.
