Hi jbvideo,
I use VLC on KDE and it seems to work fine ( I don't do to many fancy things so I cant be sure everything works, but it seems flawless).
Can you give some more details about what happens when you start it ?
Try to start it from a terminal in kde, are there any specific messages ( if so, post them here)?
Bye,
Alex. |

Hi Alex
Thanks for reply, I have it installed and is seen in kde gui as Applications/Media Player, when trying to start it I get the vlc bouncing cone to start with then after a while it just stops trying, nothing happens. In terminal I get vlc not supposed to run in root, sorry.

Indeed, it isn't
Just run it as the same (regular!) user that is the user that is running KDE ( and not as root). |

Also since you are somewhat new have you been running 'revdep-rebuild' after upgrades to check dynamic linking? |

Hi
I have added a new user to my Gentoo kde desktop system, is it possible to start my system with the newly added user instead of always the root user.? Struggling to find this info.

Oops..... Basically, you should never run KDE as the root user.....
In the handbook it states to create a regular user for daily use:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Full/Installation#User_administration
How do you start KDE now ? Using a login-manager like KDM? Or using startx?
Here is the wiki for using KDE/ KDM:

Hi
Great, sorted
My system was starting in terminal requiring root then a password, then startx
Now after your help and following the kde/kdm link I have set the auto kde desktop start with login, then going to terminal and logging in as the new user, typing vlc starts the media player, thanks again.

Ok, that sounds better !
From the terminal , you can also log in as the regular user. Then use startx should have a similar effect.
KDM is just a graphical front-end but it is not necessary.
