Boot just hangs at aic7xxx

I am having rpoblems booting into my system after a rebuild

I am using gentoo-sources 2.4.20-r8 and same on other machine that has no problems

I have an adaptec 2420u2w pci scsi card and have used it with gentoo before without problems, but now it just hangs on bootup, whether I compile it as a module or burnt in aic7xxx it just hangs

tried manual method of building a kernel and also genkernel, but it just hangs on either loading module aic7xxx if built as a module or if burnt in hangs when it brings up the a7891/0 information and that is it left it now for 20 mins ( I think that is plenty long enough )

any ideas what is causing this

Gentoo 1.4
Athlon 2500xp
1GB 333 ddr Ram
seagate 4gb 40mb sec scsi drive ( home and var )

maxtor 40gb ata133 hd ( /boot and root and swap )

Ge-Force ti4200 128 mb gfx
