hmm the kernel log shows this after a launch with the fglrx config in Xorg
https://bpaste.net/show/9a41523f8fd1

Found something: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/Intel-IOMMU.txt. Did not help by extending the boot parameters....

your google-fu is still great
did extending the boot parameters stop the logging even though the graphics are unchanged?

have you tried startxfce4 as root?
Does X -retro give a black/white stippled screen with a movable mouse cursor in fglrx mode?
if the stippled screen does appear try emerging xterm, twm, xclock and set startx to xdm vice xfce4 and try startx?
Does the GUI screen respond to up/down on the laptop brightness and backlight controls?

adding the boot parameters did nothing. I hope I did it right...

Removing IOMMU support from the kernel and then starting X with fglrx got me a segfault/freeze whatever. Only a long press on the power button helped.

I will test your suggestions tonight and respond with the results. thx for your help so far!

on intel we have the background and the x cursor. with fglrx we have only the x cursor and a black background

last couple of thoughts: does the laptop bios have settings for the graphics--I think some have choices like advanced graphics auto/on or grahics powersaving auto/on - suggest cycle through them if you have them - think I've seen reports of auto as a problem like yours
try the opensource radeon driver
google for your laptop make/model-linux-etc, btw what is the make/model

Well, it has but i don't understand it completely what they mean. There is no such thing "on or off". Just some gibberish which I do not understand. Gonna try it and perhaps i will tell me what the settings are :)

I plan to use the radeon driver. Is there any way to find out if my card is supported?

I tried and it failed again. No real "error". Just the "no modes" found.

First I got the missing module radeonsi? Why...
Then I got some warings/errors about missing intel i965 driver? I worked with the i915 all the way...

After I solved those, and used the radeon driver in xorg it still does not work...

then I discovered this:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PRIME

after this:
Code:
xrandr --setprovideroffloadsink radeon Intel

and running this, the laptop will freeze:
Code:
DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer"

running the above on intel it will work.

strange...
