|
|
Hi
I got a hand on a second hand, out of the trash bin, lcd monitor.
For some reason I am unable to find any specifications about the supported resolutions.
I tried out a mobo lying around wiht a celeron D, which showed the inital bios screen, but turned in the Vsync overcapping screen when i tried to load an ubuntu disc, or a sysrescue disc.
The reason is obvious, as nvidia-settings on this laptop claims that the screen is a crt, and crts support much higher vsyncs as lcd.
next i plugged it in my laptop.
for a surprise it works.
My questions is:
Does anyone know the supported resolutions about this lcd-monitor?
Can I trust this section of the xorg log.

because of the messages log

Which means a broken edid of the screen. I exchanged the cable to test it, and it has the same behaviour. I do not have any more vga cables, only those two.
The label on the back says
VHTeck
Model MVS-17S
Sadly i could not find a manufacturer or any specification page.
I was a bit busy recently, I run a bit outdated kernel.
Code: | uname -a
Linux ASUS-G75VW 4.4.1-gentoo_12-02-2016 #1 SMP Fri Feb 12 14:46:28 CET 2016 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

funny enough, it claims vga in, but has only vga port, but the plastics claims also dvi, but it lacks the dvi connector. i may open the montior and try to figure out how many parts are missing for dvi.
So there is no way to read out that edid from the montior right, because its vga, correct?
I may open the monitor and see which panel is inside, and from the panel i should hopefully can figure out which frequencies are supported. I hope the electronics and firmware were made in mind of hte panel to support everything the panel supports
--
and yes i could create a manual xorg-config but without proper specs, which i prefer first, it may be futile
--
edit
nope
Code: | get-edid
This is read-edid version 3.0.2. Prepare for some fun.
Attempting to use i2c interface
Looks like no busses have an EDID. Sorry!
Attempting to use the classical VBE interface

I had a computer which was unable to pull EDID - with nvidia-drivers. Booted from liveCD and voila - EDID pulled with nouveau. My 2¢. |

It's a normal "feature" of the proprietary nvidia blob for EDID to not work correctly.
You can define a correct modeline manually - man 1 cvt. |

Thanks everyone for the input.
My issue is, I have no glue which resolution is hardware wise supported.
I could disassemble the monitor and hope i find a label on the lcd screen and google that up.
I used a ruler with inch and mm markings and checked wikipedia. It seems its a 17 Inch 5:4 ratio screen. I was not aware such sizes did exists in the past.
I could rely on the software but that may work or not...
I have a sysrescuecd on my shelf, not the last one, but I think that will not matter when it is a few months old.
Krinn thanks for the big summary topic. Very well documented.
As of now I am updating my kernel and my grub.cfg ... (will not improve anything in this regard but i had to do it anyway soon).
on a price comparision webpage in my area, I saw most of those 17 inch 5:4 ratio lcd screens these days supports something like 1280x ???? and not the very old 1024x768 or what its used now. that looks like a fall back resolution which any screen should work ....
The resolution, colours seems to be quite usueable and the lcd mount is also a bit adjustable, so I try to get the best resolution out of it and will use it. |

I just updated my gentoo sources and my nvidia drivers
Than rerun nvidia-settings and i get
http://postimg.org/image/dgplfbh35/
Maybe the updated kernel fixed it. A few minutes before I had booted up sysrescue cd and ubuntu livecd to test out my monitor. Maybe the bios has remembered the data or the updated gentoo sources and "reinstalled" nvidia-drviers solved it

No idea if it was an older kernel.
when i move my mouse over the screen picture of nivdia-settings it claims
1280x1024 @75 Hz
I saw this resolution on a price comparision site for similar devices. I think these values are correct
relevant section of splat nvidia-drivers. So it was the update of gentoo-sources probably which fixed it
