Hello a few questions about KDE on gentoo.
1. How long does it take to compile?
I have a 2.66ghz P4 with 1GB ram
2. I only want to use KDE, I don't want to install Gnome but I want to run "gnome" applications such as Evolution mail client, Gaim instant messenger etc... I believe this use GTK and/or GTK2
the dekstop guide says
Code: |
USE="qt kde -gnome -gtk"
|
does using the above mean I can't run gtk apps such as GAIM?? what about gtk2 apps etc... |

I have a P4 at 2.4 with 512 RAM and it took me about one day, so that's my guess for you... _________________ fortune men-women:

No, USE variables only affect optional features of a package. Gaim cannot run without gtk, so it will be brought in. |

KDE took roughly 14 hours to compile on my notebook. I have a Pentium III processor with 512 megs of RAM.
Why use Gaim when Kopete is available? _________________ My Company: Hakata Consulting |

I can use kopete, but I prefer evolution for mail esp since it supports MS Exchange (its unfortunately I have to connect to)
I can't find a better IRC client than xchat, I've made several nifty scripts...
I guess I could use Kopete for IMing, right now I use GAIM. I guess there's choice and thats why linux rules

Kopete is awesome. I have tried Gaim and Kmess myself. You are right, Linux has many good choices. _________________ My Company: Hakata Consulting |
