Hey all,
Well this is kinda a problem but then again not really. lol. Maybe some of you had it too. I couldn't find it yet in the forums.
Ok I have a dualboot with gentoo and xp and grub as bootloader. The grub actually works fine and boots every os.
But, i reinstalled xp and of course a win install overwrites the MBR, so I reboot in gentoo via livecd and reset the grub and changed some things in the grub.conf (XP came on another partition). No real problem yet.
After applying all changes to mbr and grub i reboot and again grub works fine for gentoo, but not for win xp. I saw what mistake I made in the grub.conf and wanted to correct this.
BUT /boot/grub is GONE and yet it works. Also the genkernel images are not in /boot anymore. This is really weird cause my system works.
I 'm now rerunning the genkernel and see if the grub comes visible again(thought I did this the previous time). I'll keep you updated.
Now, Is this a bug ? GRUB ? Genkernel ? Could this be cause i rewrote the grub via livecd ?

Yep,
As i thought a rebuild of genkernel made it visible again without changes.
Maybe a bug ?

Hi,
It's not really possible to be certain, but from what you've said, I'd think the most likely problem would be that when you went to edit your grub.conf again, you didn't remount your boot partition to /boot, so all you had was an empty directory. It would certainly explain the fact that your system was still working.
As for them being there after re-running genkernel, I think genkernel automatically mounts your boot partition, so things would reappear after re-running it.
I wouldn't swear to it on my life, but it would explain what happened... _________________ Give a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day: set fire to him and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

Once your system is up and running, your /boot partition is unmounted.
You need to "mount /boot" before making changes to grub.conf.
Easy mistake to make! |
