I have a headless system that happens to have my only DVD drive in it (don't ask). I can, of course, pull the drive out and put it into my Linux workstation but don't want to turn off my Linux comps if I do not have to.

Can I mount the CDROM on the headless system and then through samba mount that mount so I can access the CDROM from my workstation? Is that a bad idea? I realize at the very least it is inconvenient but I am curious if this is worth pursuing or if there is a better way?

Thx

HomerSimpson,

You can do that for data but not for playing DVDs or music CDs. they are both accessed without being mounted.

You could ofcourse do this. Just share the dvd mount point on the server with samba, and mount that samba share in windows/linux on the workstation. If you use the supermount patch the kernel will mount the dvd automagically when you put a dvd in it. The files should show up on your workstation and you're ready to go.

Why? I don't get why people won't turn off their pc's to switch some hardware around. The right place for a dvd player would probably be inside the workstation, since changing dvd's on a server isn't really convienent (at least, not for me, my little server is hidden in the closet).
