when I try and emerge sys-kernel/gaming-sources I get
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found
05:19:37 ERROR 404: Not Found.
!!! Couldn't download ck4_2.4.20.patch.bz2. Aborting.
do I somehow have emerge searching the wrong server? do I need to report this somewhere?
edit It is searching at http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/ck4_2.4.20.patch.bz2 |

Well, that file is definitely not on that server. I did find this patch however:
http://ck.kolivas.org/patches/2.4/2.4.20/ck6_2.4.20.patch.bz2
You can try a different mirror (in /etc/make.conf) , or download it yourself by googling. You could try the ~x86 gaming sources or patching the source you have with the above ck6_2.4.20.patch.bz2 patch (modifying the ebuild).

try this:
Code: | emerge mirrorselect |
and then from the install guide:
Quote: | Code listing 8.5: Using mirrorselect
(To select a mirror automatically:)
# mirrorselect -a -s4 -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf
(To select a mirror interactively:)
# mirrorselect -i -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf
