Hi folx,
meanwhile i am reading different forums, webpages and howtos over and over again, but none of them seems to solve my problem:
i am a (relatively - anyway ) new user of gentoo linux and very fond of it, but i have problems with my (usb connected) canon powershot a20. for user root there is absolutely no problem, using "digikam", i can "connect" to the camera device and i can read from it.
Trying the same as user leads to the following error message from digikam:
Code: | ---snip---
Camera Error : Failed to initialize camera.
Please ensure camera is connected properly and turned on
---snap--- |
... well, it is _for sure_ connected properly and turned on ... "root" just did it ... therefore i think it is a permission problem, though looking for the correct device did not reveal anything helpful until now ... ahhh ... i am using devfs, which i did not know until my first gentoo installation, so maybe my problem comes from that ...
Thanx for any hint
*greetz*

You need hotplug and the best way to setup can be found at www.gphoto.org. Look at the documentation for hotplug support. The libgphoto2 also installs an usermap file. You have to run etc-update to overwrite any files. |

but i have allready done all this and have hotplug and the other requirements, it works for user "root" ... so i think it can only be one little configuration error (permission? ... but of which file?)
Thanks anyway

Did you go through this process:
http://www.gphoto.org/doc/manual/permissions-usb.html
Specifically, Section 4.3.2, Step 3, where you specify who has permission to access the camera by choosing the proper script to use? |

Thanx Kabuto and richk449 ...
you both were right and i was wrong, but just to blind to see
first: "cat /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug" showed nothing -> checking .config, no hotplugging support -> recompilation -> usb-modules did not work after that, had to compile them into the kernel, e voila! everything is working now, many thanks!

So your camera actually worked before without hotplugging? I didn't know you could do that. Of course, I dont know much. |

It obviously worked via scsi mass storage ... maybe that's why it didn't work for user, 'cause user doesn't have permissions to any scsi device ...
