|

It seems that everytime I run an app that requires opengl I have to run opengl-update nvidia as root. I can understand doing this after I run emerge nvidia-glx, but every time I wish to use opengl is too much.
If I turn on my PC and don't do this before running X, I get errors when trying to start an opengl app.
If I try to compile any software that might use the GL libs, I get errors like this post:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=87053&highlight=openglupdate+nvidia
(though for me I don't need the xfree drivers, nvidia works fine for compilation)
I'm stuck and at my wits end. I just rebooted and ran the opengl-update before starting X. I've been using my PC for about 20 minutes and just decided to test glxgears.. No glx libs found!!! Running opengl-update nvidia solves this.
Am I doing something wrong? Should I put this in cron to run every 15 mins?
Thanks for ANY advice/pointers you can give! |

You should only have to run it once! _________________ Registered Linux User #263260 |

I think I had this problem about 6 months ago...
I can't remember how I solved it... Maybe try searching the forums? If I remember correctly (which I probably don't) it had something to do with something not pointing somewhere.
opengl-update is basically all symlink trickery with files in /usr/lib/opengl/ being linked to their respective places in /usr/lib. I think my problem was that something in that process was b0rked.
Sorry I couldn't be more help :/
I can give you an idea or two, perhaps.
Try unmerging opengl-update, nvidia-glx, nvidia-kernel. Make sure /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia is cleared out. Then try remerging nvidia-kernel, nvidia-glx, opengl-update, followed by `opengl-update nvidia`. |

Have you recently done an emerge nvidia-glx?
I did so and now sometimes when I try to start an GLX application it says
Quote: | Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display":0.0"
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double bufferes visual"
|
After "opengl-update nvidia" everything works fine till - for a moment.
Then - after some work with GLX apps - the error returns.
I think of downgrading the nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel to a former build
Code: | cd /usr/portage/media-video/nvidia-kernel
emerge nvidia-kernel-1.0.4363.ebuild
emerge nvidia-glx-1.0.4363.ebuild
|
That are stable versions I used the last 4 months. The new versions seems to be buged again...
bye

I'm having a similar problem. Except in my case, GLX gets broken when I emerge a package, or when I reboot the computer. It seemed to start happening when I upgraded to the 2.6-test4 kernel, but I'm not sure that is the cause. |

/etc/X11/XF86Config, your video driver is "nvidia" right? _________________ Gentoo/AMD64, shell-tools, net-mail, vim, recruiters

Try going into /usr/lib and doing an ls -l libGL*. You'll probably find that you've got some OpenGL libraries from an old version of the nvidia driver - try deleting them and then reemerging nvidia-glx.
That was the problem and solution for me...
