Left Alt key behaviour in alternate keyboard layouts

Have recently (okay, tonight) started using the Workman-P keyboard layout.

I had to edit a few things in the default us keymap as installed on Gentoo (some keys did not produce the correct characters. They do now.).

However, when for example working in Kate, the alt-key functions (eg alt-F for File) are still on their QWERTY key locations.

Is this normal, or do I need to edit they keyboard definition file some more?

Google was not much help.
