I have got gentoo installed and am logged in as root and tryimg to configute x11.

The machine is an AMD A8 7600, I think, kaveri and the embedded graphics chip is a Radeon 7.

I have added -qt3support -qt4 suid xorg to USE in /etc/portage/make.conf and set the consle framebuffer all empty and starred ATI Radeon and checked In blob firmware in make menuconfig

emerge --ask x11-base/xorg-server
emerge --ask x11-misc/xdm

When I run startx I get

II kms drm report modesetting isn't supported, and
EE no screens found

I dont think a driver's loaded, but I cannot find a name to to call it. I've recompiled the kernel and rebooted several times. I really don't know what else to try. This is day 2 on this installation,

Check the Xorg log for some real info first.

However, if we're talking about open source driver, check your kernel settings and the standard guide.
Your card might simply need proper firmware either installed or embedded in the kernel (depending on the other kernel settings).

jfmxl,

Please use wgetpaste for posts like this. Its easier to read and search.
You will need to emerge it.

Code:
[ 33674.043] (II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported.

This normally means that your kernel is missing support for Kernel Mode Switching, it can also mean that a framebuffer driver has grabbed your video card before the Radeon driver loaded, the two drivers fought over the hardware and Radeon lost.

Your kernel looks nice and new
Code:
4.0.5-gentoo #6 SMP Wed Aug 19 23:46:14 ICT 2015 x86_64
thats the build date and time in there.

Post your
Code:
lspci
output, the output of
Code:
emerge --info
they will both fit in a post, and tell how you configured and compiled your kernel.

Use wgetpaste to put your kernel .config on the web, its far too big to fit in a forums post.

wgetpaste is very slick indeed ... I read help, but still didn't quite understand it, so I put all the data up at bpaste.net

lspci + emerge -- info : https://bpaste.net/show/122eb8652cc6

cat /boot/config-4.0.5-gentoo : https://bpaste.net/show/eaa11a335449

If you still want the first here ... well, hell, Ill just cut em and paste em ..

You need the radeonsi driver, not radeon.

You have CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL=y but haven't actually specified the required files for your card in CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE. Either fill in CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE or set and CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m.

Thanks Ant. P, sir.

So I change VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" to VIDEO_CARDS="radeonsi" in /etc/portage/make.conf?

Then set CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y to CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m and unset CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL during make menuconfig?

I'd rather set the file name(s) of the binary module in CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE, but I don't know what that module would be. Or where it would be found.

Thanks again for helping out.

If CONFIG_DRM_RADEON is 'm', check dmesg to see if the firmware is getting loaded when the module is.

Given it doesn't seem to be in kernel repo, you most likely need to install sys-kernel/linux-firmware recent enough to contain that particular blob.

That one drops quite a lot of files - you can limit it, but the method, the package uses is quite inconvenient.

emerge --ask sys-kernel/linux-firmware

I edited /etc/portage/make.conf and changed radeonsi back to radeon

make && make modules_install
make install
reboot

OK, so we left the kernel.

Now, 'emerge -1pv media-libs/mesa x11-libs/libdrm x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati' ?
(though given the message, it's probably just a matter of setting VIDEO_CARDS correctly and rebuilding mesa)

(just to clarify, by proper I mean "radeon radeonsi", so it's valid for both libdrm and mesa)

BTW, I'm ignoring for now the other poster - not for the hijack attempt, but for not reading this thread (as it not only has a list of things that need to be posted/checked but also (most likely) all the steps toward a proper solution).

Ok, I ran ...

emerge -1pv media-libs/mesa x11-libs/libdrm x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.59::gentoo USE="-libkms -static-libs" ABI_X86="(64) -32 (-x32)" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon (-exynos) (-freedreno) -intel* -nouveau* (-omap) (-tegra) -vmware*" 0 KiB
[ebuild R ] media-libs/mesa-10.3.7-r1::gentoo USE="bindist classic dri3 egl gallium gbm llvm nptl udev -debug -gles1 -gles2 -opencl -openmax -openvg -osmesa -pax_kernel -pic (-selinux) -vdpau -wayland -xa -xvmc" ABI_X86="(64) -32 (-x32)" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon (-freedreno) -i915 -i965 -ilo -intel* -nouveau* -r100 -r200 -r300 -r600 -radeonsi -vmware*" 0 KiB
[ebuild R ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-7.5.0::gentoo USE="glamor udev" 0 KiB

Total: 3 packages (3 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 KiB

... and that's all it did. I assume the last line tells the story ... nothing to do.

Then I edited /etc/portage/make.conf, changing VIDEO_CARDS to "radeon radeonsi"

Then I recompiled the kernel.

Then I ran startx ...

(II) [KMS] Kernel modesetting enabled.

Reading the log I'd expect to see something on VT number 7, but no - nothing there.

I see an (EE) at line 354-5 ...

Nope. Still no joy.

Except for the fallback to software rendering, the xorg log says things are OK - it simply quits, as there are no clients.

 Just read the guide properly.

Though that fallback is strange - recheck 'emerge -1pv media-libs/mesa' as I get the feeling you're not setting it correctly.
Otherwise pastebin mesa build log.

Like what? I read the thread before I posted, what I haven't posted is the output of dmesg as I see. It doesn't contain anything radeon-related btw, which corresponds to the empty lsmod output.

Well, It's been quite awhile since I did it for the first time (as you only need to understand it once), but this guide,
while from a different distro, should still give you the general idea about what you need to do.

At minimum, you need a window manager, but you'll probably want something like Gnome/KDE or perhaps something bit more lightweight.

Still, about that mesa build log...

Thanks, I'll read up on it. I hadn't used .xinitrc or startx in years myself. I have emerge'd xfce ... I'll read what you point me to.

For some reason I'd thought there might be a rundown on the whole process at gentoo. No, eh?

Thanks again for all your help.

Still, about that mesa build log... where would that be?

yields nothing. Without the grep I see nothing that looks like a log, or looks like a place one might be ...

startxfce4 does the trick, although I have no xterm or browser and so forth ... I imagine I can emerge them?

Thanks again for all your help.

xterm is just one of possible options...
Matter of taste, really...

Build logs are always generated during emerge, but unless you configure portage to keep them, they aren't kept.
Usually it's a good thing, as some of those tend to be large and (unless something goes wrong) not all that useful.

Unfortunately, it seems something did go wrong, so we need to see one for media-libs/mesa.
In the meanwhile you can pastebin 'equery f media-libs/mesa' so we could see if the files really aren't there or if it's something else that's the problem.

xinit: unexpected signal 2

I cannot run

equery f media-libs/mesa

I tried emerge --ask equery and it suggested emerge --ask fquery, which I ran ...

emerge --ask fquery

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by fquery (argument)
=app-portage/fquery-0.2.1.5 ~amd64

Would you like to add these changes to your config files? [Yes/No] y

Autounmask changes successfully written.

* IMPORTANT: config file '/etc/portage/package.accept_keywords' needs updating.
* See the CONFIGURATION FILES section of the emerge
* man page to learn how to update config files.

... with the result above ... now

fquery media-libs/mesa
bash: fquery: command not found

but I don't understand Autounmask changes successfully written ... I think it means emerge has prduced a new configuration file somewhere and renemaed the old one and it wants me to detlete the old one. Ill look on the man page for the incantation to discover its location and delete it.

In the meantime I cannot run fquery media-libs/mesa of equery f media-libs/mesa
