I was following the fbsplash wiki located at: "https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Fbsplash"

The wiki mentioned placing the following use flags in the /etc/portage/package.use file. When I went to do so, I discovered that my /etc/portage/package.use is a directory. Further research led me to the manual page detailing that /etc/portage/package.use can either be a file or directory.

My question surrounds the file naming convention for /etc/portage/package.use directory, what does the file have to be named so emerge can find the use flags to be used in this specific build for fbsplash?

pick anything you like, how about /etc/portage/package.use/fbsplash.use?

if you want to keep it all in one file but have some things that require a directory... you could just go for package.use/package.use

the .use in the filename is entirely optional...
