Hi!

I'm considering a machine/motherboard that comes with a LSI 3108 raid controller on it. It'll be running Gentoo (of course :) ). Planning on 8 spindles in a raid-6.

Anyone have any experience with this controller? Any big "gotch-yas" I need to be aware of?

It is advertised as supporting hardware raid 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60. But I've also read the usual advice with Linux is to use kernel raid. Would that advice still apply here? It seems this chip might have a little more "meat" behind it compared to the usual "fake-raid". Is that an accurate assessment? Is it something worth looking into and using? Or stick with kernel raid?

Thanks!

Software raid is hardware independend right? Finding the same hardware with the same firmware will be tricky when the mobo fails...

I am a fan of lvm. And with these days ssd I think raid are not really necessary ...

I think everything said here is still true. I'm using RAIDZ2 myself.

I'd stick with mdadm ... if you do use a hardware RAID controller, it might be worth it determining the on-disk format it uses. mdadm supports many formats so it may be possible to emulate the hardware raid controller in software, which takes away the headache of having to find the same hardware again should the controller fail.
