I've just moved to kernel 4.2 with the in kernel drivers for a TBS6980 card. Previously having used the closed source TBS drivers. This is on a headless Mythtv server with no sound card hardware at all. That is a fairly common setup for Mythtv due to its client/server architecture.
The driver does not appear in the kernel configuration unless Sound and ALSA support are also configured for that kernel.
That really confused me for a while until I noticed that there was a ALSA file in the cx23885 driver folder in the kernel.
Cheers
