Hi,

I've just installed gentoo 1.4 from stage 1 (phew ;)). I managed to emerge X with no problems and succesfully got X up and running with the nvidia driver following the desktop guide.

I then emerged gnome and xscreensaver, and now x refuses to start up. It goes dark and when I switch to a console I get:

Quote:

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I should also add that I had a few problems while emergeing gnome (Corrupt lib jpeg..needed a couple of emerge syncs until it panned out, also epiphany wanted me to compile mozilla with gtk2 support before continuing). After that though, both emerges went smoothly.

I've tried reconfiguring my XF86Config even though I know it must be right since I managed to start up X with it before emerging gnome.

I haven't setup emailing yet so the following snippets are approximately the same as what I'm seeing (I cut & pasted the followinf from a another topic which was in german and I couln't understand if there was a solution or not).

From var/log/XF86config.0.log:
Quote:

Module Loader present
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Sun May 18 15:06:59 2003
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config"
Using vt 7
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Quote:

Using vt 7
(--) using VT number 7

(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)

Those are just parts that I think are important. I'll try and send the full log when I can. I just thought that someone may have come across this before.

I've checked the forums and see similar problems but no solutions.

The Device section in XF86Config looks like this:

Quote:

Section "Device"
Identifier "NVidia GeForce FX 5200"
VendorName "Leadtek"
BoardName "FX5200"
Driver "nvidia"
VideoRam 131072
EndSection

As I said, X was up and running before emerging gnome, so I suspect that is has something to do with gnome.

I've tried commenting/uncommenting the XSession variable in rc.config (XSession="Gnome").

I'm not really sure how to proceed, googling for this hasn't turned up much either or I'm just to blind to see it.

Any help would be extremely appreciated...

Thanks...

Saimon

I haven't run across it, but I know configuring X well can be time-consuming. First, you said that X was running before emerging gnome. I assume it started with the default windows manager? It may be helpful to temporarily return to X's built-in "nv" driver. Try to fire up gnome with that. Next, which software versions are you using? I mean which kernel sources, X, gnome and nvidia driver.

I'm using the ck6-sources, the latest gnome and nvidia drivers (emerging without ACCEPT_KEYWORDS ="~X86".

Sorry I can't tell you more as I'm at work at the moment. The versions are the latest available in portage without any ACCEPT_KEYWORDS.

I next tried removing the nvidia module from modules.autoload and get X to load it up by adding it to XF86Config. The module failed to load. However a modprobe nvidia loads up the module without any problems (I do get the tainted kernel message).

The line about NULL Pointer dereference worries me (It appears all over /var/log/critical/current)

I've checked the nvidia driver readme and checked the files that should be installed and eveything seems in order....

I tried a XFree86 -configure but I got the same result....

Yes sorry about that...When I was submitting, it took for ages so I thought it hadn't submitted and repeated a number of times. Then I saw it had succesfully submitted each entry...

Not sure how I can remove the duplicated entries....

PostPosted: Thu Nov 06, 2003 7:36 pm    Post subject: X fails to start after emerge gnome with nvidia card [SOLVED Reply with quote

Guess who's posting this from his brand new & shiny gnome 2.4 desktop with nvidia driver :D

I did it. I managed to get everything going...

For any poor soul out there with similar problems here's how I did it:

One - I noticed that the xfree log always stopped just short of displaying the video memory size and I tried uncommenting the VideRam entry in XF86Config. That didn't help...

Two - I then decided to follow the advice of a post I read somewhere in the desktop forums and I proceeded to recompile my kernel with /dev/agpart compiled in as a module. I then remerged nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx and added the NvAGP "1" to the Screen section of my XF86Config. To my dismay, that produced the same result. This was getting very frustrating.

Three - I had a look at the nvidia site, specifically the readme that comes with the driver and saw that the NvAGP option had 4 possible values. 1 - Use NVAgp if possible, 2 - Use agpart, or 3 - try 1 and then fall back to 2 if it doesn't work. 0 - Disable agp. So I tried NvAGP "3" and hey presto...nvidia splashscreen...woohoo....

Now the moral of that story was... :? ...As I said before emerging gnome, I had X going with the nvidia driver so I don't understand why I've had to go through all those hoops to get back to where I was...but I'm happy now....

I'll now try and tweak things to make sure it's not underusing potential....

Thanks Helena for your attempt...

Hope that helps others...

I'll now include my current XF86Config :
