Hello everyone,
This is actually my first post here on the Gentoo forums. My questions concerns during/post installation. I decided to use OpenRC as my
default init system but when I view processes I notice Systemd is running... Because of this there are more root processes running than I
would like. Any information on why this is and how I can possibly rid myself of it would be very much appreciated.
Thank you |

Welcome, there are many threads on this here in the forums, latest was only a few days ago.
In short replace sys-fs/udev with sys-fs/eudev: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1029578.html contains pretty concise instructions. |

auxiliary42,
Welcome to Gentoo.
udev, which is a part of the stage3 tarball has been subsumed into the systemd repository.
For the time being, udev is usable without the rest of systemd and this is what is happening on your system.
When udev and systemd become inseperable you will either need to drop udev or move to systemd.
Gentoo maintains a udev fork called eudev which is a drop in replacement for udev - it even provides the same binary file names.
ian.au has pointed out the instructions if you wish to change. _________________ Regards,

Thank you. I masked udev and added -systemd as a global USE flag. My only concern was the large root surface that sysd processes offer. I appreciate it. Thanks. |

It is also worth pointing out that at this point eudev and udev are still basically the same thing. I use eudev as more of a political statement than anything else but it seems only fair to be open about the technical aspect.
Udev may have been absorbed, but as yet it hasn't been messed with too much. This will doubtlessly change some time in the future. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order.
Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box. |
