X loading multiple nvidia.o?

when i boot up my system, at the very start is says X is using 280+mb in
memory resources. when i look at the memory maps for X, it shows it has
two (2) /dev/nvidia.o loaded, for 131mb (of memory used) a piece.

is this right?

i know gnome is pretty heavy on the memory, but as soon as i get a
couple applications going; xchat, mozilla, gaim, all of a sudden my physical
memory hangs out around 470+mb out of 512mb. (according to system
monitor)...what gives?

kernel: 2.4.20-r8 (self-compiled)
desktop: gnome 2.4

i am still getting used to gentoo, so please excuse my n00bness thanks
