ATAPI CD burning in k3b with 2.4 kernel

Is this possible? I've been getting mixed messages.

I'd read that emerging cdrdao 1.1.7-r2 enabled the ATAPI hacks that k3b liked, but that you have to hex-edit the version number up to 1.1.8 to get it to work. This seems to have worked okay - k3b 0.10.1 boots without complaint, and shows that cdrdao has ide hacks installed, etc.

I can successfully rip an image from my DVD drive, but I can't even simulate writing - k3b just says "no", basically.

Is the 2.5.x kernel tree needed for ATAPI CD burning, or is it possible this way? For reference, I have a Plextor 12/10/32A.
