|

Can anyone clarify for me the current status of cd burning in terms of the need for ide-scsi? I've become confused as to when exactly this become available.
I use the current version of cdrecord, and burning works fine using ide-scsi. However, if I boot without the hdd-scsi=hdd boot flag, and try cdrecord dev=/dev/hdd, it does not work.I was under the impression that the latest cdrecord supported burning directly to ide drives...is that only under 2.6.0-textx? I am using 2.4.20.
Thanks.

Kernel 2.4.x - need ide-scsi
Kernel 2.6 - native IDE cdr in kernel, no need for ide-scsi _________________ -----------------------------------------

cdrecord dev=ATAPI:1,0,0 speed=8 -data fil.iso
Works in 2.4 too. _________________ Homepage : http://paul.kde.no Jabber ID : tenfjord@jabber.org

I did not have any problem using dev=ATAPI:0,0,0 on the 2.4 kernel here: no coasters in over 30 burned CDs. |

I assume, then, that I need to remove the hdd=ide-scsi from my boot command line then?
Also: Is ATAPI burning under 2.4 faster than with ide-scsi to make it worth my while to play around with this, or should I just wait for 2.6?

My 40x burner burns at full speed using ide-scsi so I don't think that ATAPI burning would change anything. Processor usage is low. Your experience may differ, though. One thing to note is that if you use any graphical frontends to burning (like K3B) you still need ide-scsi. I think only cdrecord itself supports ATAPI burning and all the other cdrtools are still lagging, so the frontends are lagging as well. _________________ Meh. |

I am using the latest version of K3b on my laptop, and I am burning CDs with the ATAPI interface. You just need to re-run the setup with the SCSI turned off so K3b knows you are trying to do ATAPI. Also, the CDRDAO stuff does not support ATAPI, so you will need to pull down the latest from CVS to get DAO support. I don't use it, so I don't need it.
