After emerge -C vmware-workstation I get boot messages ala "VMWare is not properly configured..."
Locate vmware shows a bunch of vmware - related entries in (a few examples only):
Code:

/etc/init.d/vmware
/etc/runlevels/default/vmware
/etc/vmware
/mnt/.init.d/
/usr/kde/3/share/icons/
/usr/portage/app-emulation/vmware-workstation
/usr/portage/licenses/vmware
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/vmware_drv.o
/usr/X11R6/man/man4/vmware.4
/var/cache/edb/dep/app-emulation/vmware-workstation-3.1.1.1790

Is there an easy way to get rid of it?

run /opt/vmware/bin/vmware-config.pl
its a wizard which will let you create a new virual machine and configure it.
u can run /opt/vmware/bin/vmware after u are done configuring.

if u dont want vmware to start during boot, u'll need to go to the /etc/runlevels/default directory and delete the link "vmware".

Whoops! missed the C... sorry about that. You'll need to remove /etc/vmware, /etc/init.d/vmware. Also, u'll need to remove /etc/runlevels/default/vmware. And of course, u'll have to delete the virtual machines that u created.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Harsha
