Hi.
I've looked here and there about the topic and I guess that's being a very sensitive topic. I wonder if there's a way for Firefox users, who don't rung Gnome nor KDE, to actually deactivate xscreensaver while playing videos. I currently like mplayer/xscreensaver method though not optimal, i.e. run a custom command during playback to delay screen saving for a couple more clicks. Can that be done with Firefox, too?
Aside: [how] does Wayland account for that issue?

Not sure if there's some permissions issues for extensions running code outside of Firefox, but it would be best if there was an extension that could send the command to disable the screensaver...
Why would Wayland be any different than X11? That is, unless they decided to add screen saver inhibit intrinsically into the protocol...? I've never looked into Wayland so no idea it can/can't do...

I move my mouse pointer to the lower left corner of the screen, and the screen won't lock. Upper left corner for 5 seconds and lock. Anywhere else, 5 minute timeout. A few second before the lock occurs, xeyes pop up, so if I'm idle because reading something on screen, I notice xeyes, click xeyes away and - no annoying password lock I didn't want.

I never had the reflex to search for any. Will give it a try. Not the best way however IMHO.

I think I remember Wayland, to the contrary of Xorg, implements a full screensaver feature. Thing is I don't really know how it's implemented, never bothered to know TBH. After thinking a little of how to implement it so that - it is distribution agnostic
- it is web-browser-agnostic
- it is video player-agnostic
- aso
best would be a kernel implementation. By some trick of some sorts applications could still delay screen saving using a would-have-to-be-simple API. I guess. And then the long, long support thread on Mozilla would no longer make sense. Because it makes not much sense to leave the entire implementation of screen saving delay in the application layer to me. There has to be a more uniform way to achieve it.
Just fancying maybe.

Hmm looks pretty evolved I admit. However I know it'll bother me very quickly. I kind of achieved some sort of means close to what you described. Had to drop it as it turned out to be more annoying than helpful. Nice one though.
