Greetings,

I've encountered a strange issue that I cannot seems to fix, when my system boots, up until kms is loaded I can see the prints to screen.
but after kms is loaded, I get black screen up until sddm starts.

I see the same behavior when I try to drop to shell from the gui.
happens to me with both intel and amd gpus so I assume this is a config issue.

DaggyStyle ... which framebuffer are you using?

Code:
# cat /proc/fb

As you have both inteldrmfb and radeonfb built as modules one or other probably gains precedence when loading ... or are you passing some option as a kernel parameter?

In my case I have inteldrmfb as the framebuffer, but for some reason (possibly a change in 4.3.x kconfig) I don't see DRM_I915_FBDEV in your .config

Code:
# grep DRM_I915 /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_DRM_I915=y
CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS=y
CONFIG_DRM_I915_FBDEV=y
# CONFIG_DRM_I915_PRELIMINARY_HW_SUPPORT is not set

Anyhow, the 'blanking' is a known effect of KMS conflicting with another framebuffer (normally one of those provided by 'Frame buffer hardware drivers', but in your case it may be one or other of inteldrmfb or radeonfb) ... generally its advised to build the KMS used for the framebuffer into the kernel.

best ... khay

I've disabled all other to be sue it isn't that issue.

btw, DRM_I915_FBDEV doesn't exists in kernel 4.3.

solved!

I've enabled the following configs:

  • CONFIG_DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION
  • CONFIG_FB_MODE_HELPERS
  • CONFIG_FB_SIMPLE

and I got the console back.

I think CONFIG_FB_SIMPLE and CONFIG_DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION fixed it.
