Does anyone have direction on how to got acpi working with the 2.4.21 kernel , all the directions I can find are for the 2.4.20 kernels, if someone has it working can i get step by step by step instructions?

I have heard of it "just working" with the 2.4.21 kernel but i'm not getting a battery status and haven't tried sleep yet.

acpi works perfectly with the 2.4.0 kernels tooo. You need the dsdt patch from source forge for the inspiron 5100 A2 bios revision.

I have an inspiron 5100 with A06 bios and it works perfectly. I have battery status plus i can use the acpid daemon and use sleep states.

Have since updated to A22/23 bios and also gentoo-sources r7/8.

Acpi works nicely with the dsdt patch and I can use standbye features

Here is the direct link

http://support.euro.dell.com/ch/en/filelib/download/index.asp?fileid=R65450&sid=INS_PNT_P4_5100&st=

Heres a suggestion, if you want to be able to use all the features of this laptop
(acpi functions and alll that )

AND

you dont want the hassle of patching your kernel and other problems , then I suggest not using gentoo sources.

Instead use the ac-sources , these work well without much fuss, if you are in the mood for some adventure and googling , use gentoo sources .
As I mentioned , they work nicely , but you have to do some work to get the desired results ....

I thought I'd post a reply with an update of how it is going for me. I have acpi working now using the a23 bios (the a22 worked also but not the eariler bios versions). I am using the 2.4.22 vanilla sources with no dsdt patch. Suspend to ram is sort of broke (it doesn't blank the screen or anything it just makes the computer freeze until I press the power button). I also have software suspend sort of working. It freezes about 10% of the time either suspending or resuming and it doesn't properly stop eth0. I should be able to fix the eth0 thing if I play with it for a little while.

I have all the other hardware working that I am using. I had firewire working but I turned that off because of kernel panics. I didn't get the built in wireless and I have not tried the modem (but an told it works).

axses how do you put it to sleep? Are you saying that you didn't have to patch the ac sources, just used it directly from portage? So far the ony sleep mode I've been able to get working was apmsleep and only then in text only mode, never with X. Can you put it to sleep with X running?

Also, I only found the a22 patch from the link you gave, is that really the newest?

Thanks in advance,
