At the point in the handbook to apply file systems as I was already able to create the partition table on /dev/sdb
Now when running /mke2fs -j /dev/sdb1 I get "/dev/sdb1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here!" I get a very similar message by attempting it with gparted. Drive isn't mounted, df doesn't show it anywhere and I can't seem to figure out what's holding it from formatting.
Thanks.

run see what error if any appears
and/or start gparted
delete in order /dev/sdb3, /dev/sdb2, /dev sdb1 including unmounting them if/when that complaint is raised
then (in gparted) make /dev/sdb1 as an ext2 fs
then (in gparted) make /dev/sdb2 as swap
then (in gparted) make /dev/sdb3 as an ext3 fs
{gparted creates a default ext2fs when it creates a partition, these partition/file systems are then being automounted as /media/disc_ (_ signifies space then -1 then -2 etc} |

Code: | umount /dev/sdb1
umount:/dev/sdb1: not mounted |
Deleted the partitions in gparted as suggested, then re-allocated them. It gave the same error when attempting to apply the filesystem.
Code: | mke2fs 4.41.6 (30-May-2009)
/dev/sdb1 is apparently in use by the system; Will not make a filesystem here! |
From the gparted_details.htm
Code: | GParted 0.4.5
Libparted 1.8.8
Format /dev/sdb1 as ext2 00:00:00 ( ERROR )
calibrate /dev/sdb1 00:00:00 ( SUCCESS )
path: /dev/sdb1
start: 63
end: 68099534
size: 68099472 (32.47 GiB)
set partition type on /dev/sdb1 00:00:00 ( SUCCESS )
new partition type: ext2
create new ext2 file system 00:00:00 ( ERROR )
mkfs.ext2 -L "" /dev/sdb1
mke2fs 1.41.6 (30-May-2009)
/dev/sdb1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here! |
umount still tells me they're not mounted. |

is yours a simple setup of two internal hard drives or is there something more complicated? |

This doesn't look like a partition table
Probably you selected the wrong device.

Partition table entries are not in disk order |
I just have two 37Gig raptors installed as two separate drives. Trying to get the second /dev/sdb to be the gentoo partition.
Attempted to re-partition with fdisk and got this when trying to write
[code]Command (m for help): w
The partition table has been altered!
Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table.
WARNING: Re-reading the partition table failed with error 22: Invalid argument.
The kernel still uses the old table.
The new table will be used at the next reboot.

It looks like device-mapper has hijacked /dev/sdb and made it "busy".
Try booting the CD with device-mapper disabled. |

Well, couldn't figure out how to boot it without dev mapper, so I just decided to use another live CD.
Auditor seems to work fine |

I know this is an old post but i ran into this issue when doing a fresh install and putting my home partition on separate drive, just for completeness it was the device mapper as cyrillic had mentioned and corrected this by setting the boot flag nodmraid. I am using the gentoo live dvd. Just wanted to add this in case anyone else came looking.
On the live dvd which has a bootloader select the kernel to boot and press Tab, append nodmraid to the end of the boot parameters and your good to go. |
