I saw a couple of threads and articles where people claimed that newer versions of Firefox won't work without PulseAudio or apulse.

Yesterday, I migrated from Firefox 60.8.0 to Firefox 68.1.0

To my surprise, Firefox 68.1 works perfectly fine with ALSA. I can play Youtube videos and I hear sound. Pulseaudio and apulse are NOT required.

Why do people claim that newer versions of Firefox won't work without PulseAudio or apulse?

Those people are talking about the binary as distributed by upstream.

Quite long time ago, was it version 57 perhaps, FF developers stopped maintaining ALSA code announcing only PA is officially supported from now on. I do not know how it is maintained in Gentoo portage, but god bless whoever is doing it.

That's actually not true. ALSA is still seeing active maintenance in Firefox. Whatever the official stance may be, individual devs at Mozilla still care about ALSA and are doing the necessary changes so that it continues to work. It's a compile-time choice though, and binary distros all choose pulseaudio. But this is Gentoo, where compile-time choices are in the hands of the user.

Thanks for information. I remember on Mozilla forums they said no ALSA support and the bug someone opened was closed with wontfix.
