|

Greetings Gentooligans!
It's been a while since a new live media has been released into the wild and I like to announce a new release. This live media brings lots of new packages in the ~arch (testing) branch. One of the great things about this new live media besides that it contains over 1000 packages is that it now supports full / persistency meaning that you can boot this live media on any removable device, make tweaks as you like and reboot while retaining those changes. It's more like a Gentoo to Go if you ask me.
Another great feature which will be ported to all minimal install cds is support for UEFI. This image even boots on MAC OSX hardware! Yes you heard it right!
Instructions on how to enable full / persistency: (assuming you are going to use /dev/sdb)
Warning: All data on /dev/sdb will be lost when running the dd command below. You have been warned.
- # dd if=image.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=8192k
- # fdisk /dev/sdb then create a primary partition which will be /dev/sdb4
- # mke2fs -t ext2 /dev/sdb4
- Reboot system and select your /dev/sdb drive as boot and once you see the boot-loader prompt include 'aufs=/dev/sdb4' on the kernel line. Do this every time you reboot the drive in order to retain your changes.
Booting on MAC OSX hardware all you do is follow the same steps above but while booting the /dev/sdb drive/usb stick you hold down alt/option key until you see the 'Gentoo' icon then double click load the boot-loader.
Please report any bugs and if you have any packages you wish to have included make sure to look at the package list below before making your request.

Enjoy this release.

The dvd-label tarball uses the phrase, "Hybrid ISO", even on materials exclusively for amd64 machines (on the x86/amd64 materials, it is somewhat redundant as well, appearing in two places). Notably, the phrase "Choice Edition" is absent.
Perhaps there was a last-minute change from "Hybrid" to "Choice", and the dvd-label tarball didn't get updated?
In other news, I'm very excited about this. I'll be keeping a copy in my laptop bag for "just-in-case" circumstances. |

Oh, that makes sense, but should that go on a DVD label? Hypothetically you could rip the image from the DVD and burn it onto a USB drive, but that seems like an edge-case...
EDIT: I don't mean to be overly critical. I just wanted to draw attention to what might have been an accidental oversight. |

So I am trying it on a Macbook Air 13", mid-2011, from a SD card. It boots well, but the GUI in the end is just the mouse pointer and nothing more. I was able to emerge lxqt and make it work from a command line. I was not able to mount my Mac partition.
I would like to know if I can chroot on it from 1) a proper Linux environment and 2) from a Mac OS X environment. _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." -- Calvin |

The 'Hybrid ISO' emphasize is meant for those that burn the iso to a DVD and or when we give out free DVDs at conferences like FOSDEM so that users can get an idea that it not only boots from optical media but also from any removable device. |

Ok, so Jaglover was spot-on then. I still think it's unfortunate that "hybrid" is used to mean both "USB/DVD" and "x86/amd64", but sometimes that's unavoidable. In any case, nothing to worry about for this release.
Thanks again for the new release! |

Thanks for the new live DVD! It's fun to try these out.
The only thing I'm not getting is any sound output (except from VLC, after the correct audio device is chosen).
Admittedly I don't regularly use Gentoo, and am used to distros whose precompiled versions of KDE 5 use a Gstreamer Phonon backend and Pulseaudio, rather than a VLC Phonon backend and ALSA. |
