Camera's do not all mount

Helllo,

I have a strange problem. After I have setup Gentoo, I want to import pictures from my cameras. Two of them do not getting reconiced as mass storrage, one gets.

My Canon and my Nikon not getting idetified, the Panasonnic is.

some camera (or phone) use a proprietary standard to access their content, some just act as mass storage.
you don't need gphoto at all for the ones acting like an hdd, but for the other, here comes gphoto

so you need nothing for your panasonic, and you need gphoto to get the pictures for your canon and nikon.
i don't remember the commands in gphoto to use to grab the pics, but that's what you should do, use the gphoto command to grab the pictures.
You devices are well detected, it doesn't mean gphoto will be able to use them, it just mean, they are detect and working as expect (by their manufacturer).
how and if they will be handle depend if your camera or its standard is known by gphoto or not.

I tried that. photo2 is installed, when I hook up the nikon and issue

# ghoto2 -P

I get an error, that no cameras getting found.

I was years ago reading about setting udev-rules to mount usb-devices. Couls that be an option? I am earching for that actually.

told you already, your devices appears in dmesg, so they are detected.

there's no usb rules that would let you expose their content if they aren't using the mass storage standard.

if they are mass storage, nothing is need, and if they are not, you need gphoto and it need to know the device to speak with it.
if your device is not in its list, or the protocol the device use is not in its list ; you are just doom.

you better google howto use gphoto.

If it does not expose mass storage, you might want to make friends with MTP or PTP.
MTP is newer, you can use e.g. gmtp or mtpfs (fuse-based stuff) to access devices supporting it.
PTP is kinda it's predecessor, any photo album will let you import photos this way. I've been using fspot, digikam, and shotwell for this, though digikam was painfully slow at that time.
Finally, you can use USB adapter.... Many laptops come with slots for SD/MMC cards.

You cannot safely mount a filesystem in two places at the same time. This means that for usb-storage to work, the storage device first has to be unmounted from the other device, such as camera or mobile phone. This isn't always user friendly.

To address that Picture Transport Protcol (PTP) was devised. Unfortunately everybody does it differently and it even varies from product to product from the same vendor. Some devices can be switched between USB Storage and PTP modes. Look in the menu system in the device donating the storage.

More recently, Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) has come into use. I've not heard of devices that support MTP also supporting USB Storage.

You need to assess each device to see what it supports and make your Gentoo match.
On the bright side, Gentoo can support usb-storage, PTP and MTP at the same time.
