Alright, I have a client who is ready to buy two new servers for virtualization. We run XenServer as it seems to be the best bare-metal hypervisor out there. I tried building a Gentoo kernel which would run under Xen before and failed. I want to try again. If I cannot run Gentoo under Xen, I have to use Debian 7.8 so I don't get systemd, but then I have ancient software. I'd love to have a minimalistic server install with just Samba4, DHCP server, and BIND9 via Gentoo. I could then easily run an entire AD domain on Gentoo. Using NIS attributes would make a file-server via Gentoo cake. Probably the same for print services and CUPS.

So, who can help me get a kernel running inside Xen? I am not sure what options I need.

96 views and no suggestions? Does nobody who uses Gentoo do virtualization? I cannot believe it is this difficult or foreign.

Try "https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xen".

Also see "https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/QEMU".

Don't know how good these wiki are. I use VirtualBox with multiple Linux and Windows guests at the same time.

I read that article, but thanks for the link. Perhaps it can help another user. I too run VirtualBox with multiple guests. I have Mac OSX, Windows 7, Windows XP, and DOS/Win3.11 guests, as well as the occasional Linux guest. Gentoo seems to work in VBox though.

Try to boot the current Gentoo installation CD. If it boots, install Gentoo with Genkernel. One up and running remove the unneeded drivers.

My "Cut & Paste" installation script for installing Gentoo as VirtualBox guest may also work after minor modifiction to fstab work when installing a Gento guest on XenServer.
