now that i got gentoo all set-up and rdy to go what are some good stuff i should emerge?

lame [mp3 encoding tool]

hmm, thinking of more....maybe will add some later.

? Ask 10 people and you'll get 10 different answers. ozric 100 likes using KDE, I personally can't stand it. To each their own. Try a bunch of apps and see what works for you!

Seriously though, throw app-editors/nvi on there if you want a good alternative to nano.

If you have to deal with any pkzipped packages (found mosty commonly in DOS land) app-arch/unzip, app-arch/zip are worthwhile additions to gentoo that I have come to take for granted in the RedHat distros.

xmms -- find you a good 128kbps stream while the rest compiles
eterm -- my favorite term
opera -- my konqueror is unstable for www purposes
irssi -- best irc client IMO
fluxbox -- for those times your feeling light
zip -- you know
unzip -- this also
rar -- why not for good measure
epm -- to see what the hell all you just installed

Chalk another up for xmms, kde (7hours), galeon, and abiword.
Also, check into slypheed for email (gtk), and cdbakeoven if you run kde for frontend to cdrecord, oh yea, and go buy Return to Castle Wolfenstein

I guess I will contribute a little after reading all this...

first emerge rsync to make sure u have the latest portage tree
and then use emerge --pretend first to make sure u don't install millions of dependency packages...
emerge ->
gentookit....most useful cauz of qpkg -I to query list of packages installed and etc-update to update the configurations in /etc
kde3....most beautiful
pico....easier to use than vi and emacs
xemacs....i dunno...oldschool programmers love it
perl/python.....2 of the best scripting languages...
mplayer/xine...2 of the best media player
xmms...best mp3 player
mysql...the most popular database software
php/samba...install because its popular...
mosfet-liquid-widgets-0.9.4...looking for a popular theme for kde3?
xchat...best irc client
openssh....if you want to have a telnet server
proftpd...if you want to have a ftp server
apache..if you want to have a website server
sun-jdk-1.4.0...if you want to program in java
thats it for now
