I changed the defaut runlevel in inittab file to 5, and i still cannot get x windows to start on boot...

From the desktop configuration guide http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/desktop.xml...
To add a program to an init level you will need to run rc-update. Do this for xdm:
Code: | rc-update add xdm default |
And then modify your /etc/rc.conf file, changing the display manager to the one you want to use on startup. I have mine set to start kde:
