Well, in my search for a solution to my xawtv problem I came across the suggestion of starting up xfs. (/etc/init.d/xfs start)
I get this error in xawtv:
Code:

Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-ledfixed-medium-r-*--39-*-*-*-c-*-*-*" to type FontStruct

Well, this didn't help so I later rebooted and booted up to find X no longer worked.
Code:

XFree86 Version 4.3.0
<Initialization stuff cut out>
Using vt 7
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Warning:          Symbol map for key <BKSP> redefined
>                   Using last definition for conflicting fields
> Warning:          Symbol map for key <KPDV> redefined
>                   Using last definition for conflicting fields
> Warning:          Symbol map for key <KPMU> redefined
>                   Using last definition for conflicting fields
> Warning:          Symbol map for key <KPSU> redefined
>                   Using last definition for conflicting fields
> Warning:          Symbol map for key <KPAD> redefined
>                   Using last definition for conflicting fields
> Warning:          Symbol map for key <FK01> redefined
<[FK02-FK11] Cut Out to make this shorter>
> Warning:          Symbol map for key <FK12> redefined
>                   Using last definition for conflicting fields
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/, removing from list!

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to xfree86@xfree86.org.

XIO:  fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I ended up re-emerging xfree and now I'm back in business. When I did etc-update I remember it replacing a xkbcomp file and a couple other X related files. Now I'm running xfs and it isn't causing problems so I'm not sure what the initial cause was.

  • What may have caused my fonts/keyboard settings to be corrupted?
  • Is the only way to get those /etc files back to re-emerge xfree, or is there an easier and quicker way if this ever happens in the future?
  • What does XFS do for me and should I run it all the time?

Your problems may be due to any number of problems. The important part is that it's working now :)

It may have been caused by a script incorrectly modifying your /etc/X11/XF86Config file, but I have no way to be sure.

XFS is a font server that serves fonts off of a Unix port. (You can also serve it using a TCP port, but that is really slow and not a good idea) The advantage is that on networks you can have a font server that all workstations get their fonts from. It's a way to have a centralized set of fonts rather than trying to make sure all computers have the same fonts installed on them. There's really not too much of a benifit if you only have a personal workstation, it's mostly just a matter of preference: do you want your fonts managed by XFS or XFree86? I personally use XFS and have no complaints.
