Hello, can anyone help with getting the thumb mouse device on the screen bezel of a Toshiba Portégé M700 working?

Apparently this device is supposed to be a PS/2 mouse but both Gentoo and Ubuntu have it producing keystrokes rather than pointer movement: up/down/left/right produce 1 to 4, and a press produces a 5. Presumably somehow it's possible to make it a mouse. Is it something to do with udev rules?
