The patient: Toshiba 2065CDS laptop AMDk62-366 96Mb ram (make fun all you want)
latest version and everything, x86
Well, On my 4th attempt, I think I might have a keeper. I did a stage3 install, compiled my own kernel. Maybe not such a hot idea for a novice. anyway.
grub comes up, I hit gentoo and it loads the kernel for about half of a second and reboots 'Toshiba - In Touch With Tomorrow' . No error message, nothing. If I hit 'C' at the grub prompt and type
Code: | grub>kernel /bzImage
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0c00, size=148956]
grub>boot | it just reboots as soon as I hit enter. No satisfying cryptic error or anything.
I really don't want to do a genkernel. it takes about 5 hours to compile and I get the idea it's not as good. (but if it works?)
Many thanks

ran genkernel. works ok.
I read the damn instructions and I forgot to install:
/dev/filesystem support (experimental)
Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers
