Hi,

When boot screen loads up "LILO 24.x loading gentoo.." it takes about 2 minutes to load kernel and then everything is fine... why is this happening? i was using lilo and i never experienced this problem.. i even recompiled kernel with lz4 compression for faster compression/decompression but bigger image and issue is same... then i replaced lilo with grub2 and its working very fast but kernel modules i915 cannot be loaded.. and i dont know why... what should i do? i really preffer lilo over grub2 thanks in advance :D

Did you try adding the compact option to the config file?

Arch wiki has a tip about slow booting without the compact option:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LILO#Sample_setup

Edit: looks like development of LILO stopped at the end of December 2015.

ayleid96, you are probably better trying to find out how to make i915 load with grub2 than figuring out what is the problem with lilo's velocity.

Your problem with grub2 is probably related to a bad initramfs or some missing configuration.

I have one no-multilib machine with Lilo, does the same thing sometimes. Has something to do with the way Lilo finds the kernel image, methinks, the hard drive LED stays on until Lilo finds all pieces of kernel and loads it.. This box of mine is up 24x7, so I really do not care how long it boots.

It might also be read errors: Check whether copying the kernel file (and possibly ramdisk) is quick from a running system and doesn't throw errors with dmesg.

In my case I think it is Lilo trying to cope with SSD and getting a little bit lost. :P

I've never had problems with LILO, but then again I've always used a separate /boot partition...
