I've got a patch that I'd like to add to kde, and I was wondering what the best way to do it is. Installing kde manually is out of the question for me, since that defeats the purpose of using Gentoo's awesome dependency resolution. Should I use ebuild and have it fetch, untar, and build the package, adding my patch in the middle? Is there any way to make sure my patch isn't clobbered when emerge upgrades my kde to the next version?

You could always create your own ebuild for it. I'm sure that there's tons of examples you could follow for adding in patches. Then just make sure that "emerge rsync" doesn't clobber your homegrown one when it downloads new versions.
