I just noticed that when I close the lid(display) on my laptop it locks the machine hard. I can't ctrl-alt-f# to get to a console, nor can I just type 'reboot' into a console to restart the machine. The only thing I can do is hold the power button down long enough to shut off the machine, and then restart it. I was working fine when I had completed the base gentoo install, but stopped working sometime after I started fiddling around with the USB stuff in a successful attempt to get my mouse working.

I had at first compiled all the USB stuff into the kernel, then when the mouse didn't work, I compiled the USB stuff as modules. Shortly after that I started a long emerge and closed the lid, when I came back the laptop was locked.

I haven't started working on getting ACPI or APM working yet. Do you think either of these might have something to do with it? Any other ideas.

I've seen similiar problems because some laptops sleep/hibernate/powersave when the lid is closed. Some X servers don't support this and will not wake up properly and lose the keyboard or mouse input. If your on a network you can login in over the network to shutdown the system. Remember in linux the X server will not take the whole system down.

Try to keep your box from sleeping by changing any bios settings or keeping it plugged in till you get things sorted out.

It's not the X server that's doing this. Currently I have the laptop set to boot to the console. I then login and start X manually. I haven't gotten around to setting it up to start X by default yet (but I will eventually).

I do have a framebuffer console however. It just occured to me to disable it and reboot and see if that's the problem.
