First off, i'm running the 2.6.0-test9 kernel, but i also didn't have any success with 2.4 either...
anways, the card is eing recognized just fine:

originally, i had it compiled into the kernel, not modulized, but after one boot up taking 20 minutes, i decided to make it a module....
here's where the fun begins... modprobe aic7xxx pretty much just sits there forever (overnight at least) but there are a few things spewn out in the message file...

etc, etc - if you want me to post all if it, i will, but it's alot of code, and mostly repetitous
it does the 1-15 lun stuff about 20 times, then finall quits, showing me a sda, sda1 and sdb in my /dev directory... (there are 4 of the same HDs that are properly found and configured by the adaptec bios as scsi devices 0,1 and 14, 15 with the host device at 7...
I should point out that the "smart" adaptec system is used whereby it ignores the scsi device hardcoded jumper setting and makes everything what it wants and doesn't require active termination...
anyways, upon trying to mount hda1, i get this:

and then the whole process starts over again, and i can't break the stop the mount command...
I should also note that the drives are being polled, and lights will come on and go off on each HD, and sometimes they will even spin down for about 5 seconds, then spin back up...
at this point i'm beyond confused on what to do... anyone have some pointers for me? |

Are the drives jumped to supply SCSI termination or do you have an actual hardware SCSI terminator installed? Reason I ask is i've given up on getting any Adaptec 2940s to "autoterm". It just doesn't work. The easiest solution is to either jumper the last drive in the chain to supply termination, or install a SCSI terminator. The SCSI terminator will cost ya about $20-40 depending on what country and region you live in.
The next question is: What BIOS rev does your 2940UW have? I have found that flashing the card's BIOS with a later rev fixes some issues.
Other than these two, I can't think of another reason for the weirdness. Anyone else have any ideas? _________________ Don't tell me that worry doesn't do any good. I know better. The things I worry about don't happen.

ok, so slight progress here... the main thing that i changed was having the device aotoconfig everything in the bios right as the pc startsup... i thought this was pointless as it goes through the same routine in linux on startup and takes a bit (10-20 secs or so) - i also had to turn off the SMART auto identify and setup each HD with it's actual ID jumper settings
I've gotten as far as getting the raid stuff set up, and even through my first HD is recognized, it's still having some issues with using raid 5, and it defaults to 3 disks with raid0 i think (cat /proc/mdstat says sda1[F] next to it - if i can get this fixed (may be a HD problem, i dunno) i'll be well on my way to being happy)
btw, i have 2 cards - one has an older bios and one has a new bios on it (as of a month ago) - the new one is currently in there, but had the same problems with the old one as well...
the drives are jumped to supply termination as i don't have a terminator or room left on the cable for one (will eventually have 2 cables with 8HDs on each, and can't find a 9 drive cable)
anyways, i guess most of my problem has been fixed here, just needed to disable the auto-ID feature and enable bios detection (for anyone having these probs as well)
