Hello,

I have just installed Gentoo (more or less succesfully) on my ASUS eePC. However, when booting the new system I get some OpenRC errors. Unfortunately I can't list them as they just pass quickly will starting up, but they read something like

OpenRC: Unable to execute /some/path (maybe /bin/lib-64/-something)
mkdir (...)
mkdir (...)
unable to create directory/file.

No init scipts are started, neither in runlevel boot nor in default. Commands like eselect are not available. dmesg does not list any errors except for "[intel_enable_lvds] *ERROR* timed out waiting for panel feature to power on". My fstab is configured according to my partition scheme: I have /dev/sda1 as boot (ext2), /dev/sda2 swap and /dev/sda3 is root (ext4).

I can login as root with the password set using my installation live USB. I give my kernel the "rootfstype=ext4" option.

Googleing for similar errors did yield either a wrong entry in fstab as a possible cause or missing features in the kernel config. This is not the case for me, though. I have checked several times. In fact my fstab was configured wrong at first woith /dev/sda3 as swap and /devsda4 as root, but I have changed this meanwhile, recompiled the kernel and reran the grub config. Also I ran etc-update && source /etc/profile. I've also tried downgrading openrc. Upgraded it since the downgrade had no effect on my problem.

I'm using the experimental next-kernel.

I would be most pleased if someone could help. I'm sorry for the little information available. I have listed here everything I'm able to see.

EDIT: SOLUTION:
Code:
# CONFIG_BINFMT_SCRIPT
was not set in my kernel config. You can activate this option in your
Code:
Executable file format
menue in your kernel config. Without this option your system is not able to run scribts starting with a comment. Thus it is needed for the whole init process, as far as I understand.

Many thanks,
Benno

Benno_88,

Welcome to Gentoo.

To get more information, try the following.
Boot your live media
Mount you gentoo root at /mnt/gentoo.
Now edit the file at /mnt/gentoo/etc/rc.conf
Code:
nano -w /mnt/gentoo/etc/rc.conf

Near the top you will see
Code:
# Set rc_interactive to "YES" and you'll be able to press the I key during
# boot so you can choose to start specific services. Set to "NO" to disable
# this feature. This feature is automatically disabled if rc_parallel is
# set to YES.
#rc_interactive="YES"
change the last line to read
Code:
rc_interactive="YES"
so its not a comment any more.
Save the change and reboot your gentoo.
You will see a message Press I to Enter Interactive Boot.
Press the I key as soon as you see that message. OpenRC will now let you control individual services, so you have more time to read messages too.

Ok, just rebooting now.

Here is my fstab in case this might be of interest, too:
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# noatime turns off atimes for increased performance (atimes normally aren't
# needed); notail increases performance of ReiserFS (at the expense of storage
# efficiency).  It's safe to drop the noatime options if you want and to
# switch between notail / tail freely.
#
# The root filesystem should have a pass number of either 0 or 1.
# All other filesystems should have a pass number of 0 or greater than 1.
#
# See the manpage fstab(5) for more information.
#

# <fs>                  <mountpoint>    <type>          <opts>          <dump/p$

# NOTE: If your BOOT partition is ReiserFS, add the notail option to opts.
/dev/sda1               /boot           ext2            noauto,noatime  1 2
/dev/sda3               /               ext4            noatime         0 1
/dev/sda2               none            swap            sw              0 0

EDIT: Changing my rc.conf did not change anything regarding the startup of the system... Also my root partition is still mounted as read only.

Benno_88,

You need to press the 'I' key as it boots. Boot proceeds normally unless you do that.
There is a message but it will go past as fast as anything else.

Is your root filesystem ext4?
Your fstab entry for root ( / ) is used to run rootfsck at startup. If that fails, root stays read only.

To get root read/write, so you can post more information, log in as your root user.
Then

Code:
/bin/mount -o,remount,rw /
To remount root read/write.
Next save some information and shutdown
Code:
dmesg > /root/dmesg.txt
/sbin/shutdown -h now

Inside your gentoo, at /root/dmesg.txt you have your kernel startup messages.

Boot your install media.
Mount your gentoo root at /mnt/gentoo
Put the file at /mnt/gentoo/root/dmesg.txt onto a pasetbin site and post the URL.
Depending on your install media
Code:
wgetpaste /mnt/gentoo/root/dmesg.txt
may work.

Hi,

thanks for your help. As I'm currently at work, I could not try much yet. However, no boot menue did pop up for me where I could have pressed "I". So I pressed it randomly during boot before the init scripts would start up. No success.

Yes, my root fs is ext4, as listed in my fstab above.

I will try to get red/write access the way you described it to me asap. The first error, however, is "some file not found". ie an error by OpenRC just before the init scripts should start and rioght after the kernel messages ended. I can say that the path to the file which is not found contains folder bin, lib64 and sh. Possibly init, or similar or this might be the file it can't find.

Will update as soon as I have tried to gain read/write access. Hopefully with some more information.

Many Thanks!

Benno_88,

There in no "Press I menu ... . Its a single extra line of text in the wall of text that flashes by that's too fast to read.
Check your /etc/rc.conf in your Gentoo. Maybe you edited the one in your live media instead?

Oh, I see. Sorry for acting so incredibely stupid...

I could now read

Code:
/lib64/rc/init.sh

init.sh line 6: /sh/functions.sh not found
(literally translated from my mother tongue).

First part of my /etc/rc.conf

Code:
  nano 2.6.3                 File: gentoo/etc/rc.conf

# Global OpenRC configuration settings

# Set to "YES" if you want the rc system to try and start services
# in parallel for a slight speed improvement. When running in parallel we
# prefix the service output with its name as the output will get
# jumbled up.
# WARNING: whilst we have improved parallel, it can still potentially lock
# the boot process. Don't file bugs about this unless you can supply
# patches that fix it without breaking other things!
#rc_parallel="YES"

# Set rc_interactive to "YES" and you'll be able to press the I key during
# boot so you can choose to start specific services. Set to "NO" to disable
# this feature. This feature is automatically disabled if rc_parallel is
# set to YES.
rc_interactive="YES"

I'm sure that's what you meant, no? I did edit the one in /etc/.

I will try to restart right now.

I was just already able to remount my root fs in read-write mode, however I did not collect any infortmation as I didn't have the commands you posted available. I'll be right back and post the output here.

Sorry for the double post, however I wanted to make sure its clear there is an update.

First of all OpenRC does fail with an init.sh error right away. So maybe this interactive mode can not even be activated? Well, I tried to press I, a lot. No effect.

Here is my dmesg output:

EDIT:
Why does it say "no soundcard" found? - I am sure I have the right driver selected. Also my synaptics touchpad res is x [..5888], y [..4728]. Should I adjust the values given as screen resolution in the kernel accordingly?

Benno_88,

This line is not doing anything
Code:
#rc_parallel="YES"
The # neans that the line is a comment.
You must remove the #.

The dmesg output does not fit in a post. That's why I wanted you to use wgetpaste or some other method to put it onto a pastebin site.
Looking at your dmesg fragment.
Edit. You are a special case most of dmesg is missing.

Code:
 [    0.000000] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.9.0-rc6-next-20161125 root=/dev/sda3 ro rootfstype=ext4

vmlinuz-4.9.0-rc6-next-20161125 is experimental. That may be its own source of problems.

Google says that
Code:
[    0.787964] ata1.00: unexpected _GTF length (8)
indicates a buggy BIOS and can be ignored.

This is good.
Code:
[    2.177317] scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access     ATA      ST9250315AS      SDM1 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
[    2.184131] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 488397168 512-byte logical blocks: (250 GB/233 GiB)
[    2.188153] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off
[    2.191480] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00
[    2.191533] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA
[    2.203858]  sda: sda1 sda2 sda3
[    2.208013] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI disk
[    2.315592] EXT4-fs (sda3): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
[    2.319199] VFS: Mounted root (ext4 filesystem) readonly on device 8:3.

Then there is you remounting root read write.
Code:
[   36.355493] EXT4-fs (sda3): re-mounted. Opts: (null)

Your
Code:
/lib64/rc/init.sh

init.sh line 6: /sh/functions.sh not found
is incorrect for a number of reasons.

Code:
$ equery b init.sh
 * Searching for init.sh ...
sys-apps/openrc-0.17 (/lib64/rc/sh/init.sh)
I suspect that is a copy typing error.

Line 6 in that script actually reads
Code:
. "$RC_LIBEXECDIR"/sh/functions.sh

For it to produce /sh/functions.sh implies that the environment variable "$RC_LIBEXECDIR" was not set.

Please pastebin your kernel .config file. Its at the top level of your kernel source tree.
Also post the output of
Code:
$ ls -R /etc/runlevels/*
from inside your Gentoo.
You will need to get back into your chroot for that.

Ah, I thought I only need

Code:
rc_interactive="YES"

for this interactive mode, since parallel startup was not mentioned before. Will activare parallel now, too.

Regarding the dmesg: i did comare the file
Code:
dmesg > file.txt
created. You can see the complete output above.

Yes, I know I'm using the experimental kernel, as mentioned in my first posting.

My BIOS is ill functioning or bugy? What should I do?

Code:
init.sh line 6: /sh/functions.sh not found
only pops up if I try to start it manually. OpenRC only opens saying there is a problem with my
Code:
/lib64/rc/init.sh
.

My kernel .config (hope it is complete)

Code:
#
# Automatically generated file; DO NOT EDIT.
# Linux/x86 4.9.0-rc6 Kernel Configuration

Benno_88.

Here is a demonstration.
$ wgetpaste /usr/src/linux/.config
Your paste can be seen here: https://paste.pound-python.org/show/UvDDO0N5Cxpt2JYhMjzm/
Helpers can search the URL, download it for further processing and so on. Its about helping us to help you.
Please view the link.

I was wrong about rc_parallel. It must be
Code:
rc_parallel="NO"

You must enable
Code:
# CONFIG_BINFMT_SCRIPT is not set
in your kernel.
In menuconfig that's
Code:
Kernel support for scripts starting with #!

Without that, the kernel will not execute shell scripts and the init system is all shell scripts.

Thanks for the introduction to wgetpaste. Seems simple to use. If this is commonly used here I will use it in the future whenever there are text files topost.

The
Code:
# CONFIG_BINFMT_SCRIPT is not set
seems to be the answere! I must have missed this setting after all. Even though I was sure my kernel is correctly configured (checked multiple times), I still had some doubts.
I can't test right now, but it just sounds so much like this is the problem. In case it isn't I'll come back for more advice :) .

Although the other comments (not by NeddySeagoon) did slightly upset me as they seemed quite rude without any obvious reason to it. Especially the second one just containing "YES"... wtf? I thought why not post things here as other people do instead of installing learning a new tool without obvious reason. Doesn't that make sense from my point of view? ...

Look, this thread here is to support YOU. Yet you ignored Neddy's suggestion to use wgetpaste, he even gave you an example. How comes I, a bystander, noticed it, and you, the one asking for help, did not?

The rule is simple, short text is posted here in code tags, long ones go to pastebin and parts of it will be quoted here as needed. This way the forum thread will be useful for people who come later searching for solutions.

Ok, I understand and I did learn now to use wgetpaste, also from my postings. However, I also saw wgetpaste as an example to post my texts and I thought posting the output like I did might just be fine, too. I will use wgetpaste next time, no problem.
I just don't see why people get so annoyed and rude (at least this is how it came across) because I just posted this. This is because I could not understand these reaction. The description by NeddySeagoon on the other hand did at least let me understand how to use this tool. Also I did only see an advantage of the wgetpaste methode when I was told that the complete output can not so easily understood and overseen if posted the way I did. I highly appreciate all information helping me. But what I don't like is the way of saying "you must use this, u where told to wtf"... I hope you can understand that this confuses me as a noob and makes me feel not in particulary welcome since these posters did neither help me in any way nor did they explain anything about this wgetpaste or why I should use it.

I thought: ok, you are asked to post this texts and so I did. I did not have in mind that the way might be particulary important.

Furthermore I am very thankful for NeddySeagoons replys since he helped me a great deal. I was only referring to these other two posters, especially the one who only postet "yes" in capital letters which in forums is often understood as screaming on someone. I just think this was not necessary, wouldn't you agree?

Sorry you were offended. I was offended to have to swipe my mouse page after page after page to get to the end of the comment. It's like leaving a five minute call on an answering machine.

Benno_88,

Forums posts can be at most 64k. Many things won't fit in that. Often helpers ask for a whole dmesg or a whole kernel .config (or both) becase they don't know exactly what to expect.
They may only need a few lines.

This thread will always be on the forums. Its being grown to help you but google knows about it, so it may well help others that find it.
Its better for all to have relevant parts of big files quoted than have other readers have to read/skim mostly irrelevant things.

wgetpaste has other tricks too. It can post command output. Read
Code:
man wgetpaste

When/if you use Internet Relay Chat (IRC) you must use a pastebin for three lines or more. You will be removed from most channels automatically if you fail to remember that.

Hi NeddySeagoon,

thanks for the additional explenation. I do now know the basics of wgetpaste and I have installed it, so ready to use. I will also look at the man page.

I hope this thread will help other people, too. As I mentioned in the beginning I have seen threads where users had similar issues these where solved by other kernel settings. However, this one for executing scripts was not mentioned.
I'm now very reliefed and happy since my gentoo system is finally running. Would you suggest me to delete these long dmesg and kernek config for readability.

@Tony0945
Actually I don't really want to say anything in this regard, but I simply think there are ways people whould talk with each other and ways they don't especially if you are trying to teach someone (eg other users me) how something (gentoo?) works you usually don't do it by listing commands and getting angry if your student doesn't do it 1:1 for whatever reason.

If someone would have said (like NeddySeagoon actually did at some point): Hey, your posts makes this thread unreadable. Fot this you are supposed to use wgetpaste (here and in future). Please eddit your posts. We would have been all well. No need to get upset.

But your sarcasm already tells me that you don't want to understand me and thus probably won't. Thkis is why I didn't want to say anything at all and why I thing these words are useless.

I am German. Here in Hamburg waiters and waitresses behave most of the time (nit always, not everywhere) actually relly rude: the bring you your food and drinks, but you might have to wait really long like an hour or more. They often make mistakes and don't apologiese, they just take back the false order and you wait again (hopefully for the right one). No compensation either. And if there is anything elese not right? - Exactly, no compensation. Servcie here is in middle class places _horrible_. But if you issue a complaint they just stare (in a quite scary way) at you and tell you less friendly they are doing just their job, there are other customers too and in the end they insist on a tip (in Germany you don't tip much and only if you are satisfied with the service). So you can see the tone makes the music.
And maybe this environment of mine is a good reason for me being so sesnitive about unnecessary comments. Also I'm way more sensitive than other people in this regard. Don't get me wrong: I appreciate anyone who is willing to help me and others here and I am very happy about that, even and especially if they tell me where I am wrong. Nevertheless some comments just leave the impression within me like some users want to trigger an argument. But such arguments don't make any community strong.
Ok, so much. From now on I'm going to ignore people who want to raise through such single line posts containing no information. I am not here to argue with anyone or to make anyone mad.

Many thanks NeddySeagoon for all the time and energy you invested. I really love my new system already. Much stuff to play around with.

Benno_88,

You haven't done anything wrong. Not using wgetpaste makes it harder for your helpers. You did post your .config file - all of it.
Most users that put the .config in a post don't notice that it's truncated.
The are many ways to to the same thing in Gentoo and they are are equally correct. Its just some are more optimal that others.

There is no need to edit your posts. The posts and the discussion serve a useful purpose to others.

I disagree NeddySeagoon

People don't have time to repeat the same thing over and over, when reminding someone about something is generally just enough.
At every try they make to remind you and focus on wgetpaste, you didn't answer them for clarification or help about wgetpaste.

And it is only because NeddySeagoon have a patience even Dalai lama cannot beat, but also, after you've been asked 4 times to use wgetpaste and your rant against that, that he has took time to a deeper explain on how to use it.

Sorry Benno_88: first your thread was horrible to read because of the full pasting (people are not you, they also use phone device to read and answer posting, try to imagine how they see your thread with it), people were trying to help you getting it better in order to get more help from others, instead of listening to them, you rant against them for nothing ; worsening even more the thread content.
You really did a bad job here, and your last comment is showing you have still not even start to reconsider your position and keep assuming they were going against you.

Even your rant against waitress looks wrong: if you wait long time to get the food, it's because waitress are bad ; if the waitress is slow, you will always get your food cold, when you get your food hot and you have wait an hour, then it's not because of the waitress...
I can only imagine how you speak with them when you take a table with that in mind ; and why waitress are looking rude with someone that is rude with them.

To mee NeddySeagoon mentioning wgetpaste seemed like a suggestion of posting my files from my (more or less broken) gentoo online. Since it was not clear to me from the beginning that this would change anything about readability I did assume I could post it just right away which seemed the simplest solution to me. I did really not mean to offend anyone and I had no idea this way of posting might be a bad way.

EDIT: I didn't mean to rent against anyone, especially this waitress thing is just an example. I had no idea wgetpaste would make a difference for you. If someone would have mentioned this directly I would have learnt about it and used it. Instead someone replied: You have been told to... Why don't you?? (no literal quote). Another answer to this posting was just "YES!!!!". Again: I did really not mean to offend anyone. I thought the point was simply to post the content of my files here so people (including me) can be helped. So I could not understand why people would be mad at me. I hope you can understand my point. Also I'm deeply sorry if anyone feels offended. I just wanted to tell people to talk to each other in a nice way. And again this waitress text was simply an example. I thought it might be a good one since everyone has experienced an unfriendly waitress.

NeddySeagoon:

Ok, thanks. However, I guess most people here prefere another methode of posting. I'll just edit the initial post so people who have a similar problem don't have to go through all of this. EDIT: Also I wanted to thank you for the nice words in the end. I was actually quite unsured due to some of the reactions here.
