Code:

xawtv
This is xawtv-3.86, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.0-test9-gentoo)
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-ledfixed-medium-r-*--39-*-*-*-c-*-*-*" to type FontStruct
Segmentation fault

This is kind of a sideways answer, but IMO tvtime is a much, much better tv app than xawtv. emerge tvtime or check out http://tvtime.sf.net

I am having the same problem. I even compiled the 2.6 kernel that has my webcam's driver in it (3com homeconnect webcam) and that did not even help. Here is my error:
Code:
This is xawtv-3.86, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.0-test9-gentoo)
 dlopen: /usr/lib/xawtv/conv-mjpeg.so: undefined symbol: jpeg_resync_to_restart
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-ledfixed-medium-r-*--39-*-*-*-c-*-*-*" to type FontStruct
 Segmentation fault

I had the same problem with that version but after updating to 3.90 the error was gone.

I second the Tvtime suggestion. The setup is so much easier and the picture quality is stunning.

Try this instead:
Code:
xawtv -c /dev/v4l/video0

Solved it for me.

You need to give a -device argument, such as xawtv -device /dev/video0. In xawtv 3.90, the program at least does not segfault if no argument is given (buuut it doesn't show any video either  ).

i've been having this same problem with the black screen on xawtv, too. i'm running a WinTV GO card with a Radeon 9600XT.

the way that I fixed it was to go into the xawtv options screen (i believe the hotkey is "o," but I just right-click on the TV window) and change the option that says "Capture" from the default "overlay" to "grabdisplay." voila, the TV image appeared :).

i dunno, but maybe the newest Radeon drivers have an issue with overlay? anyone else seen this problem?
