Hello
I just have install gentoo on my Pentium4, I used genkernel and boot yith lilo, but at the boot precess it tels me:

I'm biased in favor of GRUB
I'm also biased in favor of manual kernel configuration
I'm also biased for the new 2.6 kernel
Why don't you try manually configuring 2.6?

If you search the forums you will find that seems to happen quite a bit. Go back and use grub and you should be fine.
Personally, I would wait on 2.6 kernel and for most things genkernel woks just fine.
