So I decided one day that it'd be nice to give my system a little more juice. Didn't really want to spend a whole bunch of cash on a new motherboard on CPU, so I took the easy way and shot it up to 640 MB of RAM.

The thing ran swimmingly -- POST revealed that I had a new 256 MB DIMM installed and that it was A-OK, grub worked great, kernel booted. I was running with a very minimal peripheral setup -- just keyboard, monitor, and power, in case something went wrong in the installation. No problems.

Until I got to my login prompt. I was rather startled to find that my keyboard didn't respond.

"What the hell?"

I reboot into my Windows partition for the first time in ... a long time. Wow! Keyboard works! No hardware failure. I reboot into Gentoo. No keyboard response.

So I reconnect everything, including the mouse, and bingo! I CAN TYPE!

The -only- thing I can think of in this case is some sort of odd GPM bug. (Nothing of this sort happened when I -didn't- have GPM enabled on bootup.) Can anybody else confirm the results from my little anecdote? If so, this is, by far, the weirdest thing I've ever seen, and probably needs a little fixing somewhere :P

GPM was compiled using GCC 3.1. This is an Athlon Thunderbird 850, VIA KT133 Apollo Pro chipset, formerly with 384 MB of RAM. :)

Hmm... I don't know, and this is unrelated, but something strange has gone on in my computer workshop area. Thus far, three of the many computers brought in have suddenly switched keyboard and mouse ports -- they're dragged in from the car, hooked up, and when cabled properly (according to the ATX standard and the little labels on the back) the keyboard and mouse are reversed. When cabled as marked, they refused to boot. The computers, however, were normal before they entered.

Two of the computers, when brought to their original environment, reverted immediately and were once again normal. One, on the other hand, continued wanting the keyboard and mouse reversed, until a few months later when it refused to POST again, which was fixed by swapping the keyboard and mouse back.

So... what do you think of that? That's a weird bug.
