PostPosted: Mon Aug 04, 2003 6:34 pm    Post subject: new kernel boot failure Reply with quote

I thought I'd try the 2.6 test-1 kernel (I don't think there are any acpi patches for 2.6 test-2 kernel) but when I boot, I see the following:

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel

Then nothing... just a blank screen.

Any ideas what I missed?

nope... didn't know I had to. My /boot never had a System.map to begin with though.

the compilation had no errors... I used
make && make modules_install
then mounted boot and copied bzImage over.

I am using grub... maybe I'll change to lilo and see if it fixes things

thanks for your help

you don't need System.map for 2.6 ...I am using grub and 2.6.0-test2-mm2, and did not need it. hm, maybe ppl using vmlinuz still need it? I am using bzImage.

you should check some of the other 2.6 threads for info on config options that you do need, e.g. sysfs, devptsfs, etc.

also make sure that you enabled the correct options for console...

oliver,

You are missing make dep and make modules from your kernel build.

After make menuconfig you need
make dep
make bzimage
make modules
make modules_install

System.map is used for debugging -you don't need it.

actually, oliver is doing the right thing with
Code:
#make && make modules_install

...2.6 does not build quite the same as 2.4 did. just "make", by default builds bzImage and modules. and "make dep" is no longer needed.

all I do is
make && make modules_install && cp System.map /boot

everything works fine that way for me

I can definitely remember a time where I had to have System.map or it would not boot, but that was a while back when I was using 2.2 and vmlinuz ;-] maybe had something to do with mkinitrd and loading modules thru ramdisk, darned if I can remember.

one time I tried "make install" with 2.6, 'cause I read that it makes nicely named bzImage files and copies to /boot ...apparently it expects lilo, since it didn't work well at all for me ;-] BUT, I did notice that it copies System.map (which I promptly deleted, hehe) and a couple other things to /boot as well.

oliver, do this:
Code:
ebuild /usr/portage/sys-kernel/development-sources/development-sources-2.6.0_beta1.ebuild postinst

and try what it says in the 2nd paragraph.

Code:
 * Please note that ptyfs support has been removed from devfs
 * in the later 2.5.x kernels, and you have to compile it in now,
 * or else you will get errors when trying to open a pty.
 * The option is File systems->Pseudo filesystems->/dev/pts
 * filesystem.

 * Also, note that you must compile in support for
 * input devices (Input device support->Input devices),
 * the virtual terminal (Character Devices->Virtual terminal),
 * vga_console (Graphics Support->Console...->VGA text console)
 * and the vt_console (Character Devices->Support for console...).
 * Otherwise, you will get the dreaded "Uncompressing the Kernel"
 * error.

 * Consult http://www.codemonkey.org.uk/post-halloween-2.5.txt
 * for more info about the development series.

I can't find virtual terminal and vt console, in menuconfig for development-sources, is it just me being thick or have they moved? when i build a kernel like this i get to decompressing the kernel then get my bios screen in all pretty colours! not useful. and by the way....what doe the --- entries denote?
