I've figured out that xf86-video-virtualbox will not compile against rt-sources-4.9.4_p2, and presumably against *-sources of the same version. I was able to install this driver without problems against sources-4.8. This isn't the only video driver I've had a problem with using sources-4.9. So if you're having a major headache with a video driver, try rolling back to sources-4.8 first. I don't know whether to recommend filing a bug, so I'll leave that to others.

xf86-video-virtualbox at least fails to build with kernel 4.9 on gentoo now. A workaround for this is as followed
Add this 2 Lines at the end of
/usr/portage/x11-drivers/xf86-video-virtualbox/files/xf86-video-virtualbox-5-localconfig
| Code: | +VBOX_WITH_ADDITION_DRIVERS =
+VBOX_WITH_ADDITION_DRIVERS := |
now do | Code: | | ebuild /usr/portage/x11-drivers/xf86-video-virtualbox/(filename-of-your-desired-xf86-video-virtualbox-version) manifest |
and you will be able to build xf86-video-virtualbox with kernel 4.9 and later
