beandog,

/dev/svg* ?
I have /dev/sg* but I don't have udev and similar things to do any autoblackmagic to 'help' me.

For those that like the background, /dev/sr* is a block device. Its used for reading and writing data by the block :) which means data inside the the filesystem only.
/dev/sg* is a character device for raw control of the drive. Software can tell the drive to seek anywhere, then get the data back from the corresponding /dev/sr*
The filesystem is not used.

As CD digital audio totally lacks any filesystem, its the only way to play audio CDs.

I've updated the Gentoo wiki Blu-ray wiki page with the latest up-to-date information. If you need help, open a new topic in the Multimedia forum.
Added:

Get latest KEYDBs here: http://fvonline-db.bplaced.net/

If you need to crack a Blu-ray to get a key added to KEYDB.cfg, use FindVUK in Windows.

It pains me that the previous post in this thread ended with "use... Windows."

Thanks for keeping our Bluray docs up to date, beandog! It's helped me to be able to play Blurays on my Gentoo system. Really nice!

I'll report how my BluRay ripping goes when I have built my new home server.
I do hope the situation is now better.

I've successfully managed to play encrypted bluray of Sade - Bring Me Home, using KEYDB file in 'aacs' folder with Kodi. Before it wasn't possible to watch and circumvent the encrytion. Thank you for the tip, @beandog!

In case anybody is still in doubt about bluray support:
I needed a new optical drive and decided to go for a bluray drive since they are relatively cheap now. My first use case was reading audio CD's and it does that just like a non-bluray drive does.
So far i have 1 original bluray disk, and using the information on the wiki i was able to play it with mplayer and vlc, and have been able to save the contents to file with bd_splice, so thanks for all the hard work and good documentation.

I do have one question:
Now i used a KEYDB file from the internet and my bluray disk was included so everything works. Are there open source tools available for when a disk isn't included?
