|
|
I just finished emerging the latest version of KDE (version 3.1.4) and was wondering if anyone who has done that is experiencing more Konqueror crashes.
Mine crashes practically every single time I hit the Preview button on my posts (which has resulted in my not Previewing my posts anymore).
I am running the latest "emerge -u system" of Gentoo whatever version that is.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks.

I have no clue as to how to find out what version of QT I have.
When I type "locate qt" I get a bunch of directories indicating 3 but with no sub number to them.
Give me a few and I will search around and see if I can discover how to find the version....

According to the results of an "emerge search qt" I have 3.2.
Quote: |
* x11-libs/qt
Latest version available: 3.2.2-r1
Latest version installed: 3.2.2-r1
Size of downloaded files: 13,616 kB
Homepage: http://www.trolltech.com/
Description: QT version 3.2.2
|
Is that a problem?
I have noticed that several other KDE apps (like the KDE Help center) are crashing too though no nearly as often as Konqueror.
Thanks.

I experienced reproducible crashes with qt-3.2.2* and khelpcenter. Don't know about konq, since I downgraded to 3.2.1 and the crashes disappeared. |

What causes such crashes?
How can I downgrade?
Any further input would be most appreciated.
This is one of those times when I wish there would be an issues file tied with every ebuild or just one overall. Kinda of a README before emerging kinda thing. Better yet one that could be called up with something like an "emerge --info kde". I for one would certainly contribute to such issue files in terms of inputting my problems and solutions and people would not have to run around reinventing the wheel so to speak everytime they emerged something like KDE or OpenOffice.
Thanks.

To downgrade:
Code: |
emerge /usr/portage/x11-libs/qt/qt-3.2.1.ebuild
|
If you feel brave you can try the latest qt (3.2.3) which came out two days ago:
Code: |
emerge /usr/portage/x11-libs/qt/qt-3.2.3.ebuild
|
You may need to do an "emerge sync" before doing so. |

Thanks very much yardbird (and everyone else).
I think what I will do is just go back to using KDE 3.1.1a which I can select from the KDM login screen and not bother downgrading Qt. The crashes are not happening with that KDE version and I am just afraid that downgrading will break something else.
I have indeed learned something from all this albeit an old lesson from my Windows days. Which seems to apply just as much to Linux.
Namely if it ain't broke don't fix it. It's better to wait a few versions past the one you want, to come out before trying out a newer version. At least one version at minimum past your preferred one.
It seems that every single time that I have tried to upgrade my Gentoo system, KDE, or OpenOffice I end up spending more time than it's worth to iron out the problems in the interactions between the new versions.
I spend more time trying to iron out problems than I do being able to use my computer productively at such times.
This last time I was just chasing two new features in OODraw and ended up doing an emerge sync, updating my Gentoo system, then KDE, and finally OOo. Looking back on it I should have just emerged the OOo binary and have been done with it.
Oh well. Ya live and learn I guess .
Thanks.

Oops! My Konqueror browser just crashed again, even under KDE 3.1.1a when posting this last message.
I guess it's downgrade Qt for me. I only hope nothing else breaks on me!
