CPU: Athlon XP
Gentoo Version: LiveCD 1.4 x86
Well,
I just got done with 'emerge system', configuring the kernel, merging the logger and dcron scheduler.
So now it comes down to this, a bootloader. I hate grub so naturally I try 'emerge -k lilo'. It builds lilo-22.5.7.2 and gives me an error. So, I download lilo-22.5.8 and build it myself, same error. Here it is below.

So, in desperation, I tried grub, it got an error too, although it is a different error. This being the case I think maybe something I else if the problem which is causing my current ploblems.

My kernel does not have reiser FS support.
Thanks for any help, I know these problems are quite abstract, I posted this just incase someone could say, "yeah that happened to me last week!"

not to be a jerk or anything but have you maybe optimized the code into oblivion? What are your Cflags set to? |

drat...so much for the easy solution, I guess that forces me to switch to conclusion two, you've been targetted by some sort of intergalactic conspiracy. |

It's always been like this. When I'm trying to install it, any distro is like the biggest load of brahmin crap imaginable. Guess I should have left my old gentoo installation alone.
I guess I'll try lfs5.0 now. See what kind of mockery I can make of it.

opcodeemp,
It looks like your grub code is dying trying to compile reiserfs. try deleting grub-0.93.tar.gz and grub-0.93.20030118-gentoo.diff.bz2 from /usr/portage/distfiles directory, then re-emerge the files.

I tried that, didn't work. I also went into the Makefile and deleted the reiserFS option, it still tried to compile it and died just the same.
Here is an update, I tried the install (stage 1) on a completly different system and I get the same errors for lilo and grub. I don't think the problem is with lilo or grub itself but one of the dependencies. I downloaded the latest source from source-forge and got the same errors for both lilo and grub.
Also, do you have an explination for lilo? I searched on google and came up with nothing.
By the way, LFS 5.0 worked great for my server because I only had to compile a couple packages for it (I like to keep things as possible). I didn't have any problems either and I learned a thing or two. Gentoo does have it's place in my heart still, for I do not want to compile xfree86 from scratch.
Maybe I could download an i386 binary build of lilo. I'll give that a try. Thanks to you guys who took the time to post messages on this topic.

Ok, that worked. I got around it by emerging rpm (ewwww!) and installing an i386 lilo. I guess that's not too bug of a deal.

that's really strange, maybe there were some incompatible use flags or something. |
