|
|
I followed this wiki: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Systemd/Installing_Gnome3_from_scratch
However I get this error after trying to start gdm: "Failed to connect to bus no such file or directory..."
In addition to what has in that wiki I also installed: x11-base/xorg-server
startx also not starting and give an error. My video card is radeon.
Do not know if it is relevant but according https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Guide need to:
Code: | [*] Enable modesetting on radeon by default |
but there is no such option in genkernel.
Due to have no GUI it is difficult to attach here log files, but if it is needed please let me know and I will do it with wget etc...
It was long time since last installing so I probably missed something... _________________ “You can take our property, our sweet homes, even our cloths...

boot the newly installed gentoo to a CLI, then run:
Code: | wgetpaste -t /usr/src/linux/.config
wgetpaste -t /var/log/Xorg.0.log
wgetpaste -t /lib/firmware/radeon
lspci -k | wgetpaste -t |
post the url's returned here
After running startx or gdm does your computer hang requiring a power cycle to recover or does X error out returning you to a working CLI? _________________ Defund the FCC. |

notable: the radeon module is selected but the radeon driver is not listed as in use.
However he needed firmware is available in /lib/firmware/radeon.
dmesg | wgetpaste -t and post url
dmesg | grep -i vga
dmesg | grep -i firmware
dbus may not be ruuning
does running ls /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket produce 'No such file' ? Should not IMO.
What does systemctl tell you about dbus and udev?
Does your computer contain an intel vga card?

After reading your wise remarks looks that something basic is missing...
dmesg | wgetpaste -t:
https://paste.pound-python.org/show/miKrgJgkCcDE5BL8VlEM/
dmesg | grep -i vga | wgetpaste -t:
https://paste.pound-python.org/show/rOfnzWKpP3f9HLP0sLhQ/
dmesg | grep -i firmware | wgetpaste -t:" Nothing to paste"
Quote: | does running ls /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket produce 'No such file' ? Should not IMO.
does running ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf produce 'No such file' ? Should IMO |
All these commands give: No such file...
Quote: | What does systemctl tell you about dbus and udev? |
Strange but can not do it - this command: systemctl list-units gives: "Failed to connect to bus no such file or directory..."
Though as far as I know systemd is working: I enabled dhcpcd and networking is ok. It is my first time with systemd...
Quote: | Does your computer contain an intel vga card? |
Yes. May be it is a good idea to try intel, however, it looks something basic missing..
Hope this info can help...

I do not have experience with systemd so would like to know how verify if systemd is active or openRC?
Maybe there is a conflict between them... During booting I see on screen message like: "openRC..."
systemctl list-units should show all systemd's process' but only gives: "Failed to connect to bus no such file or directory..." ?? _________________ “You can take our property, our sweet homes, even our cloths...

Dear DONAHUE,
You lost patience with systemd, however, Thanks God you did not lost patience with me... your tip regarding bootloader was great!
I just un commented this line in /etc/default/grub:
Code: | GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd" |
and re-configure grub, and systemd started been active and every thing works very nice
This line is missing in the wiki that I followed: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Systemd/Installing_Gnome3_from_scratch
I see why you do not like systemd however, I like gnome3 - If not, I would stay with openRC...
Thanks a lot! _________________ “You can take our property, our sweet homes, even our cloths...
